Gauge

16 sc and 18 rows = 4x4 inches. Gauge is important to ensure the base lays perfectly flat.

Abbreviations

  • sc — single crochet
  • inc — 2 sc in the same stitch
  • sc blo — single crochet in the back loop only
  • ch — chain
  • sk — skip the next stitch
  • tr — treble crochet
  • dc — double crochet

Pattern notes

  • Use a locking stitch marker to track the first stitch of each round.
  • Change colours at the end of the round by pulling the new colour through the final loop.
  • Work in a continuous spiral for the base and body; do not join unless specified.

1. Base

Worked from the center out in warm cream to create a sturdy, flat foundation.

A flat, circular piece of warm cream yarn with concentric ridges radiating from the center magic ring.
  • Round 1: sc × 6 in a magic ring [6]
  • Round 2: inc × 6 [12]
  • Round 3: (sc, inc) × 6 [18]
  • Round 4: (2 sc, inc) × 6 [24]
  • Round 5: (3 sc, inc) × 6 [30]
  • Round 6: (4 sc, inc) × 6 [36]
  • Round 7: (5 sc, inc) × 6 [42]
  • Round 8: (6 sc, inc) × 6 [48]
  • Round 9: (7 sc, inc) × 6 [54]
  • Round 10: (8 sc, inc) × 6 [60]
  1. Fasten off warm cream.

2. Body

Switch to dusty rose and build the walls of the bag, adding gentle texture with back loops.

The dusty rose yarn forming the vertical walls of the bag, with a distinct horizontal ridge where the back loop round was worked.
  • Rounds 11–15: 60 sc picked up evenly [60]
  • Round 16: sc blo in each stitch around [60]
  • Rounds 17–25: sc in each stitch around [60]
  1. Fasten off dusty rose.

3. Flap

Pick up stitches along the back edge to create the sage green closure flap.

The sage green flap being worked flat, extending downwards from the top back edge of the dusty rose body.
  • Row 1: 24 sc picked up evenly [24]
  • Rows 2–12: sc in each stitch across [24]
  1. Fasten off sage green, leaving a long tail for sewing the button.

4. Strap

A simple, sturdy blush strap to carry your bag comfortably on your shoulder.

  • Row 1: 101 ch [101]
  • Row 2: sk, 100 sc [100]
  • Rows 3–4: sc in each stitch across [100]
  1. Fasten off blush, leaving a long tail for sewing.

5. WithMe signature heart

The same little heart sits on every WithMe original — our way of signing it with love. Use any contrast colour from the project.

  • Round 1: 3 tr, 3 dc, ch, tr, ch, 3 dc, 3 tr in a magic ring [15] — Ch 3 first (it doesn't count as a stitch). After the last stitch, ch 3 and sl st into the ring, then pull the ring tight — the dip at the top of the heart forms as you pull.
  1. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing the heart in place.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all loose ends securely.
  2. Sew the wooden button to the front center of the dusty rose body, aligning it with the sage green flap.
  3. Sew the ends of the blush strap to the left and right sides of the bag using a yarn needle and warm cream yarn for a subtle attachment.
  4. Sew the standard WithMe signature heart in warm cream on the bottom right corner of the sage green flap.

Tips from the WithMe studio

  • If your base begins to curl like a bowl, you may have pulled your stitches too tightly; try using a half-size larger hook for the base.
  • Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of every round to keep your spiral perfectly aligned.
  • Block the base piece lightly with steam if you want it to lay completely flat before starting the body.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make this bag larger?+

Yes, simply continue the base increase pattern until the circle reaches your desired diameter, then work the body rounds until it reaches your preferred depth.

Use the long tails left on the strap and a yarn needle to whip stitch the ends firmly to the side seams of the bag. Reinforce with a few extra passes for strength.
